This month, Seiko has again used the 62MAS as the design inspiration for a new set of diving wristwatches. And the dial is a metallic blue-grey that’s unique to the 55th anniversary line-up.
Measuring 39.9 mm by 14.7 mm, the case is larger than the original, and of course made from Ever-Brilliant Steel. Accompanying that 2,000 limited edition SLA017 was the SPB053 and SPB053 which measure 42.6 mm and are less faithful recreations, if you will, of the 62MAS, with lower specs and priced at $800 and $1,000. Inspired by the 62MAS diving watch of 1965, the new Prospex SPB149 takes the look of the 62MAS and modernises it for 2020. Recently I did an article on three other new “anniversary” timepieces, and one of them shared the same base design as this new Prospex. You may be wondering as to whether you’ve seen this design before, and the answer is yes, you have. Seiko named this sequence the 1965 Diver’s Fashionable Re-Interpretation.
